Finding Peace in Life’s Storms

Finding Peace in Life’s Storms...

“THIS HOPE WE HAVE AS AN ANCHOR OF THE SOUL,
BOTH SURE AND STEADFAST…”
HEBREWS 6:19

The world is like a sea—restless, unstable, dangerous, never at a standstill. As for us, we are the ships that go out upon the sea and are subject to its changes and motions. Without an anchor, we are likely to be carried off course by currents, driven by winds, and tossed by storms. Below are 4 truths regarding this anchor of our soul that God has given to us:

1. The purpose of the anchor. The anchor’s purpose is to hold a ship firmly in place when winds and currents would otherwise move it off course or into dangerous conditions. God has given us certain truths that are intended to hold our minds securely to truth, holiness, and perseverance. (Eph. 4:14)

2. To keep us from shipwreck. God does not intend His people to be shipwrecked. He bought you at too great a price and values you too much to see you broken to pieces on the rocks. Therefore, He has provided a safeguard for you so that when Satan’s temptations, your own sinful nature, and the trials of the world attack you, hope may be the anchor of your soul, both sure and steadfast. (2 Peter 2:9)

3. To keep us in peace. An anchor is also needed to keep a vessel from distress, for even if it is not wrecked, it is a miserable thing to be driven here and there, in whatever direction the wind may shift. Similarly, a person who is controlled by external influences is unhappy. But God has given us an anchor in solid and sure truths that operate on the mind to keep it from being harnessed and dismayed. (Is. 26:3)

4. To keep us from losing ground. Believers are sometimes tempted to return to the country out of which they came, that is, to their old ways of living. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not a deceitful mixture, but a system of fixed principles and revealed facts. This realization makes us secure and immovable in our faith. (Heb. 4:12)

“God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain,
but without stain.”
~ C.S. Lewis

“A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner, neither do uninterrupted prosperity and success qualify for usefulness and happiness.”
